When my brother-in-law and I had the chance to buy a significant batch of Filipino sinking-grade oud almost four years ago, we didn’t wait around.

Opportunities like that don’t come with announcements. They come quietly, and they don’t repeat themselves.

We documented every part of the journey. From the day the wood arrived, still raw and rugged, to the long, detailed process of prepping it in the UAE.

Sorting. Cleaning. Shaving.

It took weeks, but what we ended up with were some of the most immaculate and aromatic shavings we’ve ever worked with.

This wasn’t a standard run. Every part of the process was measured, careful, unhurried. We started with a slow rise in heat over the first two hours. No rush. The early volatiles needed space — to reveal themselves rather than be forced out. That’s when the most elusive facets show up: soft citrus, ethereal florals, faint greenery, and that rare blue-cheese-saffron high note that only comes from certain Filipino wood.

We captured each fraction with discipline, swapping receivers every 30 to 45 minutes. Every cut was labelled and evaluated by scent alone. We weren’t chasing yield. We were chasing personality.

Some fractions were intentionally stopped early — not everything needs to go the full distance when you know exactly what you’re after.

After distillation, the oil rested. Three to four weeks in a cool, dark space.

No movement. No interference. Just time. Allowing the layers to settle and round out.

Letting the sharp greens melt into the florals, letting the powder wrap around the spice, letting the whole thing breathe into something balanced and haunting.
