Oud and bakhoor reveal their fragrance through heat.
The goal is not necessarily to set the aromatic material itself on fire. Instead, controlled heat releases the aroma gradually.
What You Need
For a traditional charcoal setup:

heat-resistant incense burner

suitable incense charcoal

charcoal tongs

appropriate lighter

oud chips or bakhoor

Using Charcoal
1. Prepare Your Burner
Place the incense burner on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from fabrics, children, pets and anything flammable.
2. Light the Charcoal
Use suitable tongs and an appropriate lighter to ignite the charcoal according to its instructions.
Allow it to heat fully before adding aromatic material.
3. Transfer It Carefully
Use charcoal tongs to position the hot charcoal securely in your incense burner.
Never handle hot charcoal with bare hands.
4. Add a Small Amount
Place a small piece of oud or a suitable amount of bakhoor onto or above the heat source depending on your burner setup.
Start small.
More material does not necessarily create a better aroma.
5. Let the Fragrance Develop
Oud can change considerably as it warms.
Allow the first piece to develop before adding more.
Using an Electric Oud Heater
An electric heater offers a different experience because the temperature can often be kept lower and more controlled.
Lower heat may reveal different aromatic characteristics from charcoal.
Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for your specific device.
After Use
Allow all charcoal, burners and heated material to cool completely before handling or disposal.
Hot charcoal can remain dangerous even after it no longer appears intensely red.
