Parliament Hill
Parliament Hill
Some fragrances begin with an ingredient.
This one began with a memory.
Long before I knew what oud was, before distillation, before perfumery took over my life, I was a schoolboy in London.
Parliament Hill was ours.
After school we'd take the long way home across it, pockets full of sweets from the corner shop, sugar on our fingers, laughing about nothing in particular.
At that age, you don't realise you're making memories.
You're just living them.
But scent keeps the record.
Damp earth after rain. Leaves crushed under school shoes. The air turning cold as one season gave way to the next. And always that sweetness, sticky on your hands.
Years later, scent took me a long way from that hill.
I travelled to Bangladesh, my ancestral homeland and one of the oldest homes of agarwood. Some moments only make sense looking back. Because it was there that I met the woman who would become my wife.
And through her, I met oud.
What followed was a slow, deliberate education. Learning the raw material. Its traditions. How a wounded tree becomes one of the most valued materials on earth. Eventually, building our own distillation.
I'd found the rarest materials I could have hoped for.
But the memory I most wanted to capture was back in London.
Parliament Hill.
I didn't want to recreate the smell of a park.
I wanted to recreate the feeling of remembering one.
So I built it entirely from natural materials.
It opens on frankincense, bright and resinous, like cold air at the top of the hill. Then rose absolute, jasmine and orris butter, softened by tonka, vanilla and cocoa. The same sweetness I carried home across the park all those years ago.
As it settles, sandalwood and oakwood meet the darker warmth of labdanum, benzoin and myrrh, while Balsam of Peru and beeswax absolute wrap everything in a deep, honeyed glow.
At its foundation, two materials most perfumers never get to work with: real oud and natural grey ambergris.
The oud gives it weight. The ambergris gives it skin, a salted warmth that stays close and lasts.
Nothing dominates. The florals soften the woods. The resins deepen the sweetness. The oud anchors everything beneath it.
And somewhere in all of it is still a schoolboy walking home with his friends, eating sweets, with no idea where life was about to take him.
Parliament Hill isn't really about a park.
It's about distance.
Between childhood and adulthood.
Between London and Bangladesh.
Between the first time a scent stops you and the day you give your life to it.
I travelled thousands of miles to find some of nature's rarest materials.
And somehow, they brought me home.
